UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT
The University of Port Harcourt, one of the second-generation Federal Universities, was established first as a University College in 1975 and was accorded the states of an autonomous full-fledged University by October 1975. Anxious to see the University take-off immediately, the Rivers State Government, by October, 1977, allocated, as temporary site, the premises and buildings of a newly constructed Technical School in Choba Village; about 20 kilometers North-West of Port Harcourt. An additional 4000 hectares of land, adjacent to the temporary site and abutting on the New Calabar River and the East-West Road, was subsequently acquired as the permanent site. The site has been under programmed development since 1978.

RIVER STATE UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
The Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt , the first Technological University in Nigeria was established in 1980 from the Rivers State College of Science and Technology which was established in 1972. Located at NKPOLU-OROWORUKWO, Port Harcourt The University has a 17,000 students and 3,000 staff population. Not only is it the first technological University in Nigeria and first to be situated within the Niger Delta Region, its uniqueness could be seen in other areas. It has a mandate to address the problems of the Niger Delta, it is the only University in Nigeria that offers a degree in Marine Engineering, the only one with an Institute of Pollution Studies, the only one with an Institute of Geosciences & Space Technology and the only one with a Centre for Niger Delta Studies. The University provides consultancy services and demand driven courses to industries business and the general public.

RIVER STATE POLYTECHNIC
The Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori was established by the Rivers State Government in 1988. The Military Governor, Colonel Anthony Ukpo inaugurated the provisional Council on May 13, 1988. The Edict establishing the Polytechnic was signed into law by Group Captain Ernest O. Adeleye, Former Military Governor of Rivers State on March 25, 1989. He also performed the Formal Ceremony of the institution on May 19, 1990.
The Polytechnic was established to provide the courses of instruction, training and research in Applied Sciences, Technology, Commerce, Business Management and such other fields of learning as maybe determined from time to time with regard to the work force needs of the State in particular and of the Federation in general, especially the development of middle-level power.

Rivers State College Of health Science and Technology
School of Health Technology was established in 1974 to train low and middle level manpower for the health sector, as unit under the Rivers State Ministry of Health and was headed by a Principal. The school which started with the training of Public Health Inspectors had over the years expanded in programme content and scope and is offering courses in:

  • Environmental Health Technology
  • Community Health Extension Worker (CHEW)/Junior Community Health Extension Worker (JCHEW)
  • Medical Laboratory Technician/Medical Laboratory Assistant
  • Pharmacy Technician
  • Health Information Management
  • Dental Surgery Technician.
  •  

On the 17th of August 2001, the executive Governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili signed into law a bill passed by the Rivers State House of Assembly for the establishment of the Rivers State College of Health Science and Technology. The enabling law thus brings under one administrative umbrella the long existing Schools of Health Technology, Nursing, Midwifery and Public Health Nursing. This development is in keeping pace with the requirements for the training of 21st century health professional. This is also the first of its kind in the nations.
